Dan ‘Vinyl only’ Barton DJ’s at Moonshadows

Posted by Dan | Posted on 24-05-2009

So I’m going to be DJ’ing a summer chill set with a british twist at Moonshadows in Malibu on June 20th with my buddy David Ireland.

I’m returning to the decks by popular demand after the fun and wax trickery at The Thompson Beverly Hills, the last time David and I DJ’ed together.  It’s a vinyl only affair once again as I still feel like a faker ‘DJing’ with a computer and I don’t do CD’s.  Come on down.

Bruce Labruce

Posted by Dan | Posted on 21-05-2009

Man, myth, legend - Bruce Labruce is really going for it on Saturday night.  This exhibition, in brought to you by Javier Peres & Flaunt Magazine is definitely not for the faint hearted, but it’s definitely one of the darker highlights of LA’s art offerings this month.  So knock back a Belvedere  cocktail and dive into his bloody world.  There will also be a special performance on the evening that shouldn’t be missed.

IS THERE AN ECHO IN SPACE?

ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN’S OCEAN RAIN TO GET BLASTED INTO SPACE

** NASA Astronaut to Take All-Time Fave Album to the International Space Station **

Move over Star Trek. Echo & the Bunnymen’s mighty 1984 album Ocean Rain will boldly go to the International Space Station on June 13th courtesy of astronaut Colonel Timothy L. Korpa.

Korpa, who has been a Bunnymen fanatic since his teens recently contacted the band via their website about his upcoming three-month mission on the ISS. Though Ocean Rain is Korpa’s favorite, he gave the choice to the band to pick which of their albums they would like him to take on his mission, saying that he would snap photos in space with the album and crew of the ISS and give the album back to the band as a souvenir when he returns to Earth. The Bunnymen ecstatically shipped out to Korpa an autographed copy of Ocean Rain right way.

The NASA mission happens to tie in with a box set reissue of Ocean Rain, set for release on May 30. The set will include a live version of the album recorded at the Liverpool Arena last November, plus a DVD documentary and booklet. The first 1000 copies ordered will be signed by McCulloch and guitarist Will Sergeant.

Ocean Rain, which has lived long and prospered since its release in 1984 was Echo & The Bunnymen’s fourth album and is widely considered their masterpiece. It mesmerized Echo’s fans and broke them to a much wider audience on the strength of such towering songs as “Silver,” “Seven Seas” and the unforgettable “The Killing Moon.”

The Bunnymen are currently in the studio putting finishing touches on their highly-anticipated tenth studio album entitled The Fountain, set for release later this year.

If you can’t get the bike, get shirty

Posted by Dan | Posted on 18-05-2009

If you enquire as to how much a Falcon Motorcycle is, you will be politely dealt with (as the company is run by cool people), and it will be discreetly explained to you that these things just don’t work like that.

drive_side1
According to Jesse James’ Garage Magazine - Every Falcon Motorcycle will go down in history.  This is because of their uniqueness, their effortless beauty and the resultant machine being much more than just a sum of the parts.  Because of this, the only way you can get to own one, is to contact Falcon, initially just to discuss the possibility of a bike build and then see if there is a good fit, a good meeting of minds and a good vision of what it might be like if you were to be the next owner of a Falcon Motorcycle.  The decision will be made based on whether you share a mutual vision.  That’s not arrogance, it’s just the way that they do things round there, and it is reflected in the integrity of the final result.

This begins to make more sense when you realize that Ian Barry has a vision for just TEN Falcon motorcycles, built from ten classic british motorcycle bodies, which can take three months or more to build.  That should give you an indication of just how sought after these ten bikes are.

This, in part, has seen to it that Falcon has become one of the most talked about motorcycle companies in the world this year.  Falcon are simply making motorcycles with a true vision of what the legendary British bikes of the past (Triumphs, Nortons, Vincents etc.) should be in the modern world of bespoke design, and this (relative) simplicity of approach has created a connection between the world of motorcycles and the creative worlds of the arts.

This is why Ralph Lauren has asked Falcon to lend their ‘Bullet’ Falcon Motorcycle (the winner of the motorcycle world’s ‘Oscar’ - The Best Custom at the last ‘Legends Of The Motorcycle’ Concours d’elegance’) to him for six weeks  to compliment his store window on Rodeo Drive, Los Angeles.  That’s why Jason Lee (owner of The Bullet) Josh Homme from Queens Of The Stone Age, Alan Aldridge, Sage Vaughn and so many others have become fans.  It seems that these motorcycles that have such design integrity and vision, have transcended the normal world of ‘custom’ culture and become object d’art’s  themselves.

This is something that sometimes perplexes Ian Barry - the motorcycle builder behind Falcon.  He builds bikes to be ridden, not to sit in museums and galleries.  He builds them for lovers of motorcycles, not for celebrities even though sometimes they are one and the same.

Bottom line, for all their functionality and performance characteristics, they are breathtakingly beautiful machines.

So now, against this backdrop and the kind of underground hysteria revolving around Falcon normally reserved for rock & roll bands, we are left scratching our heads thinking… ‘How can we have a piece of this?’

Well we might not be able to say ‘Been there, done that.’  but now we can say ‘Bought the T-shirt’.

By popular demand, Falcon have released a series of limited edition T-shirts.  Only a total of 500 of these first limited editions have been produced and are available exclusively on their web-site for only $32.00 each.

These are going to be INSTANT collectors items, just like the bikes.  Well, not just like the bikes, but you get the idea.

They are superb quality and beautifully printed using ecologically minded printing techniques. Not your run of the mill t-shirt - the softnessof the cotton, cut, stitching and all over design matches the thought and care that they put into the bikes.
